Captain Marcus Black (マーカス・ブラック (たい) () Mākasu Burakku-tai'i?)[1] is the leader of the Hamlin Battalion 3rd company and is thought to be an arms dealer for a European terrorist group called W.O.L.F. (Western Order Liberation Front). He is a supporting antagonist in Time Crisis 4, serving as the boss of Stage 1/Chapter 5.

Appearance[]

Black has turquoise eyes. It is not known whether he has hair or is bald because of the hood covering most of his head.

Black wears a raincoat of dark colored tigerstripe pattern and black half-sleeves. Said raincoat also has a pull-up mask covering his mouth and is unzipped when he is killed. He also wears pants of regular Hamlin Battalion soldiers design but with only one knee pad on his left knee, black combat boots and green gloves. As for equipment, he has a wrist-mounted wire winch gun attached on his lower left arm to swing from high places and hurl heavy objects. He has a device which prevents the Terror Bites from attacking him on his waist.

As for weapons, he is armed with a custom-made Barrett M107 anti-tank rifle which he fires in one hand. Said weapon also has a charging ability to fire a single guaranteed crisis shot that can also damage barricades but leaves Black vulnerable while charging the shot. He also uses two different types of Terror Bites, which is dependent on the player's outcome in the third screen battle. The mite Bites is used if the player succeeds or the mosquito Bites (according to a cutscene, it is from the truck shipment) is used if the player fails.

Overview[]

Black held a low position in the U.S. military due to their harsh treatment for special operations units. In addition, he is unhappy for receiving payment cuts for the front line missions he frequently undertakes. Hence, he is extremely disappointed with the U.S. military and the government. To fulfill his interest of money, he broke apart from the battalion and attempted to sell a truck shipment of Terror Bites to the terrorists at an agreeable price[1] (this action will cause Frank Mathers to call him a backstabbing traitor). The truck shipment was stopped as Black was forced to defend himself until the moment he was killed. The moment Giorgio Bruno, Evan Bernard, and Captain William Rush inspected the corpse of the paramilitary members, including Black, it appeared that Black, like all Hamlin Battalion members, betrayed the United States. Players must play the PlayStation 3 version of the game to find out if "W.O.L.F." was an organizational disguise of the Hamlin Battalion (to avoid prosecution) or if the Hamlin Battalion simply betrayed the U.S. and allied themselves with "W.O.L.F.".

Quotes[]

Japanese version Rōmaji translation English version Remarks
こいつを (わた) してたまるかぁぁ!! Koitsu wo wata shite tama'ru kaaa!! You want it? Then come over here and take it! Marcus Black's first words before battling the V.S.S.E. agents and William Rush
こうなったら、お (まえ) らごとブツを () (まつ) してやる!! Kou natta ra, o mae ra goto butsu wo shi'matsu shite yaru!! You guys are finished! Marcus Black, before the three-screen event battle
しつこいヤツラだ。 Shitsu ko'i yatsu'ra da. You don't know when to quit, do you? Marcus Black, if players fail the three-screen event battle
...アメリア (ぐん) (へい) だと!? ...Amerika gun no hei dato!? He was from the U.S. Military? William Rush, upon learning that Marcus Black was once a member of the U.S. Military

Trivia[]

  • Black is the second character in the Time Crisis series to betray the organization he worked for the purpose of making money. The first is Jake Hernandez from Time Crisis 3 who did it for the same reason. He is the first character to betray an antagonistic faction as the Lukano Liberation Army which Jake used to work for is a supporting faction.
  • Black is the second antagonist to use a sniper rifle, the first being Jared Hunter from Crisis Zone. His weapon is the first to have charging ability.
  • According to Black's dogtag, his blood type is AB.
  • Black's first name is subsequently shared by the Stage 1 boss from Time Crisis Elite.
  • Despite being called "Anti-Tank Rifle" by Rush, the proper term to the weapon used by Black would be Anti-Material Rifle.
  • Black is the only antagonist that the player has to battle in a screen battle (Wild Dog does not count because he does not engage them in the fifth screen battle).
    • In the third screen battle, he houses 40% of Enemies conditions (x5 Lifebar holds 10%, x4 Lifebar holds 11% and has invulnerability similar to Giorgio Zott's final lifebar, and x3 Lifebar holds 19%).
    • If players fail the screen battle, they only have to deal with 2 lifebars regardless of the number of lifebars depleted in the screen battle. Hence, the fastest way to demostrate this is to not shoot Black at all, face the left screen at all times and be out of cover so that he can destroy the barricade more quickly.
  • Black's theme music is also played when battling against the V.S.S.E. agents in the final day Crisis Mission.

Voice Actor Connection[]

  • Black shares the same Japanese voice actor with Gregory Barrows (Hisao Egawa). In addition, Black resembles The Pain[3] from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater because they share the same Japanese voice actor, able to use animals for attack (Marcus Black uses Terror Bites while The Pain uses hornets) and have most of their faces covered until a certain point (Marcus Black's facial features are revealed when he killed, The Pain after removing his balaclava). His English voice actor (Sam Riegel) was previously the voice of Donatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 TV series and also previously did the Nickelodeon dub of Riven from Winx Club. Sam Riegel would also later voice Baxter Stockman[4] in addition to Donatello[4] from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled which is an enhanced remake of the 1991 Arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
