First Lieutenant Jack Mathers (ジャック・マザーズ (ちゅう) () Jakku Mazāzu-chuu'i?)[1] is the leader of the Hamlin Battalion's second company and the supervisor of its Biological Weapons Research regiment. He is a supporting antagonist of Time Crisis 4, serving as the boss of Stage 2/Chapter 10.

Appearance[]

Jack has buzz cut blonde hair and green eyes. He is the older[note 1] brother of Frank Mathers and has similar features such as being very muscular and having brutish pig-like features along with pointed ears.

Jack wears a brown polo shirt with the logo of the Hamlin Battalion at the back, half-pants of regular Hamlin Battalion soldiers design (hence, there are no knee pads) with a black utility belt around his waist and green combat boots. Said utility belt is attached to his upper body by suspenders. He also wears a dark blue lieutenant hat and brown gloves. As for equipment, there are numerous case boxes on his utility belt and there is a case box on his both pant legs. He has a device which prevents the Terror Bites from attacking him on his neck. As for weapons, he is armed with two M249 para machine guns clamped and fired together, Mk 2 hand grenades and uses mantis Terror Bites. Even with occasionally disarmed by Captain William Rush, Jack is an expert wrestler who is able to defend himself in unarmed combat and even a hit from a large wooden crate on his head did not work against him. Prior to that, even being electrocuted for a sufficient time period only momnetarily stunned him.

Overview[]

Jack was once a hero in the past and extremely loyal to America.[1] Serving Gregory Barrows, Jack does not always listen when it comes to certain tasks (since he tends to be a fanatic type). Knowing that Barrows' orders are absolute, Jack vowed to listen and communicate with Barrows more closely.[1] He is sent to guard the Biological Weapon Research Facility in Wyoming against those who oppose Barrows. It is unclear whether he died after the battle or merely fell unconscious and was arrested later. However, judging by the weakening of his voice, it could be assumed that he died after getting shot many times by the V.S.S.E. agents (weakening him) and punched by Rush (effectively killing him).

Trivia[]

  • Jack's hairstyle is similar to that of his namesake, the Jack robots of the Tekken series of fighting games also created by Namco, especially to Gun Jack. Ironically, one of the Jack robots, Jack 2, was voiced by William Rush's Japanese voice actor (Akio Ootsuka) in the (てっ) (けん) -TEKKEN- OVA.
  • Jack is the first antagonist who has a relative. Said relative is also an antagonist.
  • Jack is the only antagonist who talks while fighting, notably the part when he has boss invulnerability.
  • Jack, along with Wild Fang, is a boss that was not finished by shooting down to death as he was finished by an uppercut from Rush.
  • A sound of a gong used to signify wrestling matches is played when Rush tackles Jack on his 3rd lifebar and when the score display screen is shown.
  • Due to the clamped machine guns firing together, Jack is the first antagonist who can fire more than one crisis shot projectile in the horizontal plane. The projectiles converge into one as they travel toward the players, causing them to only lose one life unit instead of two if hit by his crisis shots.
  • Jack is seen smoking a cigar in the Arcade version. However, the cigar has been cut from the PlayStation 3 version.
  • Jack's theme music is first played in the fourth screen battle at Stage 2 Area 1 prior to encountering him.
  • Jack's military rank of first lieutenant means that he is more of an executive officer as U.S. Army company-sized units are usually commanded by a captain (the rank held by Marcus Black) or a major.

Voice Actor Connection[]

  • Jack shares the same Japanese voice actor with Frank Mathers and the Head of V.S.S.E. (Daisuke Gouri). In addition, the late Daisuke Gouri previously voiced Jeff from Ninja Ryuukenden (OVA version of the classic Ninja Gaiden games), Heihachi Mishima from Tekken 3, Tekken 4, Tekken 5, Tekken 6, Tekken: The Motion Picture, Soulcalibur II and Death by Degrees; Scott Dolph[3] from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty; Silver Horn (Silver Hound (シルバーホーンド Shirubā Hōndo?) in Japan)[4] and Incentas[4] from Megaman X: Command Mission (Rockman X: Command Mission (ロックマンX (エックス) コマンドミッション Rokkuman Ekkusu Komando Misshon?) in Japan); Cunningham[5] from Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and would later voice Volf from Ninja Gaiden II and Raiden from the The King of Fighters XII.

Notes[]

  1. In Time Crisis 4's Japanese subtitles, Jack is referred by Frank as aniki ( (あに) () aniki?), an informal Japanese honorific for an older brother.
